Mulled Apple Cider

My husband and I just finished “winterizing” our yard – raking leaves, planting tulips (don’t forget to do this before the ground freezes!) and putting away deck furniture. I was rather thankful when the clouds started rolling in and I felt the first bits of rain, because we were forced to call it quits for the rest of the afternoon. No complaining here!

When the weather is cool, you can almost always find me with a hot drink in my hands. And what’s the perfect post yard work beverage? Hot apple cider! I love throwing in different spices and kinds of fruit when I make mulled cider, so get creative with what’s in your kitchen. Here’s what I usually do when I make mulled cider, but mix and match with whatever you think would taste good!

Mulled Apple Cider
Adapted from Bobby Flay’s cider recipe

2 quarts apple cider
2 oranges
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
3 whole cloves
2 whole cinnamon sticks
2 cardamom pods

Pour cider into a saucepan and turn burner on low. Add the zest and the juice of one orange to the cider. Slice the second orange thinly and add slices to the cider. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a simmer. Pour into individual mugs and serve.

For the adult version, add alcohol such as brandy or spiced rum to taste.
